PJ Cosmetology
description of the procedure
Here’s a treatment that is aimed at renewing the skin and improving its appearance with the application of specific substances. This procedure is applied to both skin on the face and body. Various types of acids are used depending on personal needs and the patient’s complexion. The patient may experience various sensations during the procedure, from gentle tingling to mild burning, which is a normal result of the active substances working. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure and use sun care formulations after the treatment.
What is chemical exfoliation?
Chemical exfoliation is an exfoliation method that consists in using one or more acids to remove the layer of the outermost, damaged cells from the face or body. The substances cause controlled peeling, revealing a new skin layer. They are applied in controlled conditions to ensure the hygiene of the process. After the application, chemical exfoliation is neutralised, which prevents further effects of the acids.
What is the treatment like?
The procedure starts with thorough cleansing of the skin of the face or body to remove impurities and prepare it for the application of peeling substances. Then a selected formulation is used; it is left on the skin for a specific time depending on the type of chemical exfoliation used and the expected results. Once the action is completed, the substance is neutralised or rinsed, and the skin of the face or body is soothed and moisturised with special formulations. The process is precisely monitored to ensure appropriate and even application as well as avoid irritations.
Chemical exfoliation for dry skin
In the case of patients with dry skin, chemical exfoliations aimed at hydrating and rejuvenating the epidermis are used. Such treatments are usually scheduled for the seasons when the skin is more vulnerable to water loss, such as winter or early spring.
Chemical exfoliation for acne
In the case of skin prone to acne, we usually choose acids that may facilitate the regulation of sebum secretion. Salicylic and azelaic acids are among the products most frequently chosen for anti-acne treatments.
Chemical exfoliation for the body
Chemical exfoliation applied on the body is often aimed at improving the general skin texture. They are used by people whose goal is to reduce the visibility of stretch marks or scars. These procedures are usually more intense and require longer recovery time. The skin on the body is thicker compared to that of the face, which conditions the use of stronger acids or a longer action time.
Who is this treatment for?
Chemical exfoliation is often chosen by those wanting to improve the general condition of their skin. It can be used by both women and men of all ages. It is important to schedule a consultation with a dermatologist or cosmetologist prior to the procedure; they should assess the condition of the skin and select the right type of chemical exfoliation. In the case of patients suffering from active inflammation, e.g. fresh acne, it may be recommended to postpone the procedure until the symptoms resolve.
Various types of acids used in the exfoliation
- Azelaic acid – often used in the treatment of rosacea, inflamed acne and hyperpigmentation. Chemical exfoliation with azelaic acid may be used in patients with uneven skin pigmentation. The substances are applied in a way that spreads the product evenly over the treated area.
- Lactobionic acid – applied on dry and sensitive skin. This acid is gentler on the skin and it is often selected for procedures applied to more sensitive areas, such as the neck or cleavage.
- Salicylic acid – applied on acne-prone skin. Has antiseptic properties that may play a significant role in the case of acne-prone skin.
Chemical exfoliation at a beauty salon
Chemical exfoliation treatments can be performed in a series adjusted to the individual needs of the skin. Typically, a series of 4 to 10 sessions take place every 2-4 weeks. Each session is preceded by progress assessment and potential adjustment of acid concentration.
